Stephen Fleming, PhD: Co-founder and President
Stephen found his roots first in psychology and later as a neuroscientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Realizing the potential of the pig to transform preclinical research in his graduate studies on nutrition and cognition, Stephen combines a passion for data science, commercialization, and entrepreneurship to help accelerate research.
Ryan Dilger, PhD: Co-founder and Vice President
As a trained animal scientist and nutritionist, Ryan Dilger has long recognized the value of the pig model. An active scientist in nutrition for humans and agricultural species, Ryan has been a key leader in engineering solutions for using the pig in neuroscience. Ryan combines a passion for nutrition, engineering, and industry experience to Traverse Science.
Brooke Smith, DVM/PhD Student: Animal Health Consultant
Brooke Smith is a 6th year DVM/PhD student in the Veterinary Medical Scholars Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She investigates the effects of feeding soybeans and soybean isolates or products on the immunological response of post-weaning age piglets to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV). In her role as an animal health consultant Brooke provides her expertise to assist with project planning and data interpretation regarding the study of nutrition and immunity, particularly in context of bacterial or viral challenges.
Sharon Donovan, PhD, RD: Advisor
Dr. Sharon Donovan received her PhD in Nutrition from UC Davis and currently is a Professor and Melissa M. Noel Endowed Chair in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. Her laboratory conducts basic and translational research in the area of pediatric nutrition, focusing on optimizing intestinal, microbiome, and cognitive development of neonates through dietary interventions. She has published ~ 200 manuscripts and book chapters and has garnered over $30M in research funding from NIH, USDA, foundations and the food and pharmaceutical industry. She serves on advisory boards for food companies and government agencies and is currently a member of the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Advisory Committee. She was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2017.
